Major Achievements through Advocacy

FWLD actively involves in building up strong public opinion, lobbying, and advocacy in grass-roots to policy and international level on elimination of all forms of discriminatory laws. Such advocacy is the base of successful policy intervention. Major advocacy efforts include:

A study conducted in 2000 on Discriminatory Laws against women. This was widely disseminated, which led to the formation of high power committee to amend discriminatory laws and become strong tool for law reform advocacy.
FWLD in collaboration with other groups implemented a nationwide advocacy on Equal Inheritance Rights. The result of this advocacy was a nationwide movement which led to the amendment of the Country Code. This resulted to the legalization of abortion and women's right to property.
Recently FWLD is lobbying at national/international level for the amendment of discriminatory citizenship law. We are involved in lobbying for the formation of various networks to collaborate for the elimination of discriminatory citizenship law, provide legal services to affected people. We have successfully won various cases in providing citizenship certificate. This lobbying has been crucial in the declaration by the House of Representative to guarantee citizenship through mother on 31 May 2006 .
54 women were released from different prisons from July 2003-January 2005 who are imprisoned on the charges of abortion related offences. FWLD oriented 685 law enforcers and service providers on new law on abortion, conceptual clarity and identifying challenges they were facing while providing services and enforcing law through 20 district orientation program. FWLD also made more than 4,000 leaders of grassroots community aware on abortion right and facilitated for social acceptance and change mindset.
FWLD submitted letters to the then HMG asking for reduction in registration fee for women on acquisition of land and other fixed assets by 25 percent. After continuous advocacy and persistent follow up, the then HMG finally announced a reduction in the registration fee on land and fixed assets by 10 percent through the budget speech of 2004/05. This percentage was later increased to 20 percent.
