National Conference and Rally for Gender Equality (February 2002)
FWLD carried out a series of activities and coordinated the National Event for Gender Equality that included a National Conference and a National peace rally for gender equality on February 12, 2002 . The objectives of the event were:

To build a strategic consensus amongst the various organizations on women's rights

To conduct advocacy for gender equality and protection of women's human rights
|
▪ |
To create pressure to pass the Country Code (Eleventh Amendment) Bill and to amend discriminatory laws against women |
▪ |
To bring the voices of affected persons to share the impact of discriminatory laws on them |
▪ |
To link up the event of gender equality from central to grassroots level and vice versa. |
National Event for Gender Equality was one of the remarkable pressure building activities carried out to raise women's issues in Nepal . This made an outstanding impact on women's movement in Nepal . It gave a platform for human rights activists and women's rights activists to raise their voice, which ultimately resulted into positive change.
Major result of the event was:
Networking of Women Groups
Formation of working committee consisting of representatives of various organizations has built a strong networking of women and human rights groups. Their zeal and support for the joint efforts made the National Event for Gender Equality a great success.
Building of Common Consensus
The preparatory meetings with various stakeholders held before the National Conference and Rally had facilitated in building common consensus of different groups on the Country Code (Eleventh Amendment) Bill.
Linkage of Women's Movement from Central to Grassroots Level
National Event for Gender Equality has linked the issue of women's rights from central to grassroots level and vice versa. It has enlightened the fact that demand of equality is not only the voice of elite women, and that grassroots peoples are equally concerned about it.
Women's Issues Strongly raised by Media
The involvement of media in the whole process of Event has facilitated media-persons to internalize and raise women's issues, which ultimately has also created pressure for the passage of the Bill. |
