Minorities and Caste Discrimination
Nepal has multifarious ethnic groups, colorful traditions and vibrant religions and rituals. It is a country that allures innumerable tourists from all over the world every year. People overseas are in awe and admiration for the Nepalese diverse ethnic groups and culture and the lifestyle of the Nepalese civilization. However, the country also has her darker side that is hard to conceive by most people. Amongst this exuberant and vivid life exists discrimination and distinction based on race and caste all across the Nepalese society, paving way for inferiority feeling of many ethnic minorities within the country. Discrimination on the basis of caste is also clearly observed in Nepal and treating people as the lesser-group in the community has always been present. FWLD believes that marginalizing and unequal treatment to people on the basis of caste, colour and religion should not be accepted in Nepal . Provisions against discrimination of the inferior and the schedule caste inhabitants of Nepal were introduced in the year 1963, but the law to date is very lenient. We are determined to eliminate such discrimination by striving to filling up the gaps that exists in the law and effectively enforce the laws that already exist.
FWLD proffers legal counseling services to the minorities and excluded groups in Nepal , especially homosexuals/lesbians, commercial sex workers and HIV and AIDS infected people.
