What isn't Sexual Harassment?

Sexual harassment taking place in workplaces is not a new issue in Nepal . Lot of women and girls are subjected to sexual harassments in their workplaces be it hotels, restaurants, government or private offices and even schools and colleges. They quell their experiences resulting in mental torture, frustration, distraction and above all, deterioration in their work-performance. The International Labor Organization published a study on Sexual Harassment in the Workplace in Nepal (Series 2) the year 2004 and the research was conducted by FWLD and her team. The study dealt with perception, nature, prevalence and effects of the problem of sexual harassment. It had four specific objectives:

  • To understand how different groups of people in different work places perceive sexual harassment, how they deal with it and what they think can be done to combat the problem

  • To determine the extent and effects of sexual harassment through primary research in selected sectors

  • To understand the existing legal position and existing legal mechanism regarding sexual harassment

  • To provide recommendations for what can be done to combat sexual harassment and what mechanisms and procedures are needed to address the issue
