Trainings on CEDAW and OP – CEDAW
Nepal ratified the Convention on Elimination on all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) in 1991 and signed its Optional Protocol (OP - CEDAW) on September 8, 2000. The OP – CEDAW was ratified by Nepal on 18 December 2006. FWLD has recognized its significance and has been trying to domestically and effectively implement the CEDAW and OP-CEDAW provisions and have imparted a collection of Trainings and Workshop programs related to these International Instruments.
Training of Trainers on CEDAW (3-7 December 2003)
A five-day Training of Trainers on CEDAW and its Optional Protocol was held on December 3 – 7, 2003 at Dulikhel, Kavre. Nineteen participants attended the training. The participants represented were law practitioners, human rights and women rights activists, university teacher, police, media and NGOs.
The main objectives of the training were:
- To produce a pool of trainers to conduct trainings on CEDAW Convention
- To aware participants about the reporting mechanism to the CEDAW Committee and OP-CEDAW
- To enable participants to provide technical assistance to GOs, NGOs and other organization working on CEDAW implementation
- To develop strategies to enact law on sexual harassment in the workplace and marital rape and to protect women's right to nationality
Training on Optional Protocol to CEDAW (7-10 April 2005)
With an aim to raise awareness on OP - CEDAW, a training program to a combination of lawyers, social workers, women activists and researchers was organized from 7-10 April 2005, especially to hold them responsible for carrying forward the advocacy and other programs for the ratification of the OP to CEDAW.
The objectives of the training were:
- To familiarize with the with CEDAW and OP - CEDAW
- To facilitate the ratification of OP - CEDAW in Nepal
- To understand why and how the principles of CEDAW and OP – CEDAW would prove useful in promoting women's human rights
- Build strategies to effectively apply in our own works
Training of Trainers on CEDAW (16-20 August 2005)
A five-day residential Training of Trainers (TOT) on CEDAW Convention and its Optional Protocol was conducted by FWLD in collaboration with IWRAW – Asia Pacific at Godavari Village Resort, Lalitpur from 16-20 August 2005. The participants were selected from areas of advocacy of CEDAW and OP – CEDAW and other relevant works on women's rights and also comprised of lawyers, NGO personals, women activists, media persons and representatives of sister organization of major political parties.
The objectives of the TOT were:
- To create conceptual understanding among participants about the CEDAW Convention
- To evaluate the implementation status of CEDAW Convention on domestic context
- To create understanding about OP – CEDAW and its complain mechanism
- To create in-depth awareness about reporting mechanism under CEDAW Convention
- To develop monitoring framework of the Concluding Comments
- To build up strategies for effective implementation of CEDAW Convention and ratification of OP – CEDAW
- To create pool of trainers as well as advocated on CEDAW Convention and
OP – CEDAW
Trainings of Women Lawyers on CEDAW and its Optional Protocol (23-27 February, 2006)
To build up the capacity of women lawyers in claiming the rights, two trainings of Women Lawyers on CEDAW and its Optional Protocol were conducted. Both the trainings were held from 23-27 February, 2006 simultaneously. Altogether forty two participants took part, twenty-one each in both the trainings. The participants were practicing women lawyers representing different districts across the country. The participants were selected on the basis of their advocacy experience on CEDAW and its Optional Protocol from the interested applicant lawyers.
Objectives of training were to create conceptual understanding about CEDAW and its Optional Protocol, to create awareness about reporting mechanism and complain mechanism under CEDAW, to enhance knowledge on the Concept of Human Rights, Humanitarian Law and Crime against Humanity, to enable the participants to conduct training on CEDAW and its Optional Protocol, to train the participants on Legal Profession Skill and to enhance understanding about the judgments made by Supreme Court on women's Right.
Training of Trainers (TOT) on the CEDAW Convention and the Constituent Assembly (30April-5 May, 2007)
FWLD conducted a residential "Training of Trainers (TOT) on the CEDAW Convention and the Constituent Assembly" on 30 April – 5 May, 2007 in Dhankuta , Nepal . Participants were women lawyers from the districts, namely: Sunsari, Morang, Jhapa, Illam and Dhankuta.
The main objectives of the ToT were:
- To create a conceptual understanding of the CEDAW convention and its Optional Protocol
- To inform about the reporting mechanism and the state obligation under the CEDAW Convention
- To create a conceptual understanding of Constitutionalism and the Constitutional Assembly
- To inform about Federalism
- To create awareness about the formation of the Constitutional Assembly and the Electoral process
- To fortify the participants' capacity to conduct trainings on CEDAW convention
