Training on HIV & AIDS and Trafficking

Trafficking is the third major business of the world. The vulnerability of women and girls to HIV/AIDS and trafficking has largely become a product of the inequitable society in which we live and the impact of economic policies, global disparities in power, and uneven access to and control of resources. The sick practice of law and corruption has been helping to flourish trafficking in Nepal and the social discrimination makes trafficked and HIV infected to live in the margins of mainstream society.

Trafficking is an organized crime developing rapidly all over the world which comes under the second ranking of organized crimes after narcotic drugs. Roughly one crore of women and children are sold each year today, which makes the total of such trafficking more than ten crores. In the context of Nepal , 150000 to 200000 Nepalese women and children have been already sold in the market of India for sexual business. They are sold in Mumbai, Goa , and Puna by showing them false wishes of employment and marriage.

FWLD conducted a Workshop “Regional Programme on Socio-Legal and Gender Responses Against HIV and AIDS, and Trafficking” on March 31- April 2, 2006 . The workshop was conducted for Judges, Government Attorneys, Police, Lawyers, Paralegals, NGOs and the Government in Kathmandu . The programme's objectives were to understand trafficking and HIV & AIDS from the Human Rights perspective and its linkages with one another and to respond appropriately against the problems of both trafficking and HIV & AIDS. An extension of the Regional workshop with the same objectives as the Programme, “National Programme on Socio-Legal and Gender Responses Against HIV and AIDS, and Trafficking” was conducted on April 2, 2006 for Judges, Lawyers, NGOs, Police, Public Attorneys and Affected Persons.
