Workshop on Using International Constitutional Norms and Mechanisms to Advance Women's Reproductive Rights - 18 to 20 August, 2006

Many international human rights instruments and conferences including the women's world conferences have recognized reproductive rights as women's rights and many countries have already accepted that 'abortion right is women's integral part of reproductive right's. In the context of Nepal , abortion has been legalized under certain circumstances. Hence, the legalization of abortion in Nepal reflects both Nepalese newfound dedication to social change as well as the many ethnic cultural and religious influences in Nepalese legal system. The legalization of abortion in Nepal is the first step to recognize reproductive health right, but the challenges remained for the effective implementation of the law. Challenges are there in the area of service providing, for the social acceptance of abortion as women's reproductive right, lack of sufficient infrastructure, lack of trained human resources, safe and accessible abortion services etc.
